One of the main considerations in taking care of tropical
fish is your selection of tropical fish tank. Since there
are many tropical fish tanks to choose from, outlined here
are the factors you need to consider in making your
selection.
One of the main considerations is the size. Fish tanks come
in different sizes and the right size depend on several
things. One important factor is the type and number of fish
that youre going to take care of. You dont want the fish to
get too crowded in the tank. The general rule is bigger is
better. Larger tanks give fish more room to swim in, and
the larger volume of water helps reduce toxins and keeps the
water pure for a long time.
Standard sizes you can choose from are 60 cm, 80 cm, 100 cm,
and 120 cm tank sizes. The size that you would select would
also depend on the behavior of the fish that youre getting.
Marine tropical fish like to swim around, so a larger tank
is what you should get. Also, if you get young fish, a
larger tank would give fish sufficient room even if these
grow up to be full-sized adults.
Next to consider is the construction and shape of the fish
tank. For shapes, there are several, but in general, you
can choose from rectangular and round aquariums. This is
more a matter of taste and space available in your home.
As for construction, you can choose from either glass or
acrylic aquariums. The advantage of glass is that its
cheaper and is more resilient to scratches. Glass tropical
fish tanks are also perfect for marine tropical fish since
its not affected by salinity. The downside is its heavier
and prone to breaking and cracks. Acrylic is lighter and
tougher, though it can scratch easily and is more expensive.
Once you decide on the construction and type, youd need to
consider the equipment. The important devices you should
have are a heater and a thermometer. As tropical fish are
accustomed to warm temperatures, you would need to simulate
that in the fish tank. Thats what the heater is for.
Aside from that, tropical fish are also sensitive to
temperature changes, so you also need a thermometer to check
that the temperature is at the right level. Of course, you
would also need the standard aquarium devices such as
lighting, filter, and air pump along with the heater and
thermometer.
