A Look at Beautiful Ripon, North Yorkshire
By Simon Haughtone

Ripon, North Yorkshire lies on the banks of the River Ure. This town is beautiful and is primarily a market town that was founded more than thirteen hundred years ago. It is renowned for being a Cathedral City that has a number of monasteries in it that each dates back to the seventh century.

The old parts of Ripon North Yorkshire are overflowing with cafes, shops and pubs as well as restaurants. In addition, the town also boasts of having numerous museums and historically important buildings. These include Wakemans House, Ripon Cathedral and Studley Royal. Even Fountains Abbey as well as Ripon Spa Gardens is very famous landmarks in this town.

Every Thursday, Ripon market square buzzes with activity as a market is held here very close to an Obelisk that dates back to more than three hundred years.

It is here that the Hornblower will blow his horn at nine oclock in the night.

There are many local attractions in Ripon that are worth taking in and these include Brimham Rocks, Courthouse Museum, Fountains Abbey, Lightwater Valley, Newby Hall and Norton Corners.

You will also do well to take in the Police and Prison Museum that exemplifies the harshness of typical Victorian prisons. Then, there is Ripon Canal that is worth checking out, especially on a nice calm and peaceful day. Ripon Cathedral happens to be among the most beauteous and oldest Cathedrals in all of Britain and is certainly worth visiting. It holds the Crypt of St Wilfrid.

Ripon races have been held here for more than three centuries and Spa Gardens as well as Studley Royal are also worth taking in during a visit to this town. There is also the excellent Workhouse Museum that, in the year 1854, was the home for vagrants. This museum today shows the grimness of the place in which workers would be locked in their cells during the nighttime, only to be released in the daytime so that they could get food and work.
